Jisatsu Circle

June 8, 2008

Sometime back, i happened to watch Suicide Club the movie. The introduction was mindblowing. It started with a ordinary scene at Shinjuku train station. The usual bustling crowd. Then appeared a huge pack of girls, descending down the stairs in loud chatters and giggles. They were from various high schools and middle schools. Everything seemed pretty normal, except for the large number.

The train was approaching.

The girls suddenly grew silent, their erstwhile joyful laughter and carefree expressions transformed to one of seriousness & determination. They joined hands and lined up neatly before the yellow line, attracting the attention of bystanders who were confused by this sudden mass movement.

The girls began chanting, swinging their hands in unison. “a one, a two and….a THREE!”

It was dramatic. They leaped across, off the platform and into their deaths, as the approaching train sped past and crashed into all of them.

The rest of the movie was plain chilling and gory. intriguing yes. But the bloody gore was very much like Battle Royale. And the whole movie was abit hard to understand. In spite of this, i followed through and read the manga after. Manga is definitely less scary, lol. But nevertheless, it sent shivers up and down me spine. And i liked the realism of the drawings. I read in the interview that this movie was made in response to Japan’s climbing suicide rate a couple of years back. It was somewhat like a docu aimed to address the reason and understand the pysche of the teenagers who harboured suicidal thought.

Felt somewhat inspired by this. If i ever gonna create something, express or communicate an idea, i want it to be something along this lines. With impact, with intrigue. No gore though, i’m a certified chicken.

I hope i didn’t turn you off with my words. I recommend Suicide circle if you’re into intrigues and bored of rom-coms and standard formulae.

Since you like Suicide Club (And I assume Noriko’s Dinner Table as well) you should try Litchi Hikari Club! It’s by the same guy who did the manga of Suicide Club.

It’s not scanlated in English yet, (someone’s working on it though) but you can order it in Japanese from Kinokuniya or Amazon Japan. If you happen to have a Kinokuniya anywhere near you, do that instead of Amazon JP ’cause their shipping costs are insane. I’m sure other stores that order books from Japan could get it for you, too, as long as you give them the ISBN.
